What Is Specialty Coffee?

— The Story Behind That One Special Cup

You might have seen the term “specialty coffee” on café menus or on coffee bean
packages. But have you ever wondered, “What exactly makes this coffee so special?”
Contrary to what some might think, “specialty coffee” doesn’t just mean “fancy” or
“delicious” coffee. It’s a globally recognized category with clear and specific
standards.

So, What Defines Specialty Coffee?

Premium Specialty coffee is evaluated and graded according to strict guidelines set by the
Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). Experts assess a variety of qualities, including
aroma, sweetness, acidity, body, aftertaste, and balance.

Only coffees that score 80 points or higher out of 100 can be officially labeled as
“specialty coffee.”

So when you drink specialty coffee, you’re enjoying more than just good taste — you’re
drinking a cup that has passed rigorous professional standards.

Where Does the “Special” Begin?

      1. It Starts at the Farm
Specialty coffee is typically grown at high altitudes, in small farms that pay close
attention to soil, climate, variety, and timing. These natural factors — known as
“terroir” — deeply influence the coffee’s flavor.

      1. Hand-Picked with Care
Instead of using machines, farmers carefully hand-pick only the ripest coffee
        cherries,
often harvesting multiple times to get it just right. That means lower
        volume, but much higher quality.

      1. Nearly Defect-Free Beans
The green (unroasted) beans are carefully sorted, and only those with minimal
        defects
make the cut. Quality control is extremely strict.

      1. Transparent and Ethical Trade
You’ll often find detailed information about where and how the coffee was grown.
That’s because specialty coffee supports traceability and fair, ethical trading
        practices
        — something more and more consumers care about today.

Why Does Specialty Coffee Cost More?

As you might guess, growing and processing specialty coffee takes a lot more time,
    effort, and care.
From the farmer’s hands to your cup, every step is done with intention.
The price reflects not just the flavor, but the craftsmanship, ethics, and sustainability
    behind it.

Discover the Value in Every Sip

Specialty coffee isn’t just about quality — it’s about a global story of people, passion,
and purpose. That cup you’re holding may have started on a hillside farm halfway
across the world, picked by hand, and roasted with precision.

Next time you see “specialty coffee” on the menu, take a moment to think about the
journey behind it. It might just make your cup taste even richer.
